Some States procedures are archaic and do nothing to help get things done. Electronic voiting should be brought in and States meetings should be modernised. Structural inefficiencies in the way the States operate need to be addressed urgently.
States’ meetings takes days. Recently it took over 2 hours just to vote someone as a Jurat. There are also other items of business that really should not have to be raised at a States meeting.
Electronic voting would speed up the democratic process and would allow the publication of the results of votes, informing the public of how their Deputies voted and, consequently, make them more accountable.
I also believe that there should be a review of the current machinery of government, which should include consideration of the number of Deputies, committees and sub-committees and whether our current electoral system provides a suitable level of accountability.
