The current provision of aid to the world’s poorest is shameful, as is the view expressed by some deputies, as well as the Policy Council itself, that ‘charity begins at home’.
An action plan is required which should be about more than cash. We are of the size that we can provide more innovative solutions that engage Guernsey people directly.
UN recommendation of giving 0.7% GDP may not be applicable to our economy. We currently give 0.13%. A target linked to our fiscal take may be more appropriate and 1.5% has been suggested.
It is also disappointing that Deputies spent twice as much time considering how much they should pay themselves than discussing overseas aid in February.
I believe we could develop an action plan that could also build in the involvement of young people in Guernsey.
