Develop a housing strategy

The availability of affordable housing continues to be a major issue for young and old. Part of the solution is to progress the Housing Association model. However, other, more radical solutions should be established. We need to look at the underutilised assets on the island, which includes vacant buildings and brownfield sites.

At the same time we need to address the abuse of the open market system by the splitting up of houses for temporary workers. We should be looking at ways to free up these buildings for local people.

The problem is not only for those at the bottom of the property ladder, but also for the older population who would prefer various forms of sheltered housing. We should be looking at increasing the provision of sheltered housing which would free up housing for young families.
