Regarding renewable energy. As a very knowledgeable engineer regarding renewables. I would want to see you pushing tidal energy and being opposed to wind farms. The wind argument is shown by practical example to be totally flawed, with none of the existing wind farms producing anywhere near their design performance.
If I had that assurance you would certainly have my vote, as I like your manifesto and web site.
Thank you for your question John. I agree that we should be focussing on tidal energy. Wind farms have yet to prove to be cost effective and tidal energy would currently appear to be our best option. I am happy to listen to the experts, my main concern is that we reduce fossil fuel consumption and make the best use of our renewable resources.
I totally agree with the issue John has raised and I think it needs to be pushed as I think a lot of people are shying away from the fact as it is seen as something ‘new’ and they are not wanting to go ahead with this.
Thanks Ryan. Yes and, coincidentally, had a good chat with John about this on the doorstep today.
Hi Heidi
Firstly I would like to say I was impressed with the layout of your manifesto.
I am a Guernsey woman living in St Andrews and working in finance.
I would like to know your position on licences granted for workers in the island. We are currently experiencing the loss of many jobs across all sectors yet there are still licences being granted to outsiders in education and finance. Whilst I appreciate some top jobs cannot be filled from within the island many others certainly could. In my experience many low paid part time jobs that would have traditionally been done by school children on a part time basis are no longer available as many Europeans are using these as fill in jobs alongside jobs in pubs and restaurants.
How is it we allow so many European people to work in Guernsey but Guernsey people cannot work in the EU?
I would welcome your views on this matter.
Many thanks for standing for our parish.
Nikki
Hi Nikki. I do believe thst licenses should only be given where there is a skills gap in the Island. A key part of my manifesto is developing skills in Guernsey to improve the opportunities of local people and reduce the need to being in expertise from outside.
In terms of workers coming in and doing more than one job, what needs to change is the licenses themselves. Instead of housing licenses, these should be employment specific and should not allow them to take second and third jobs if there are locals willing to do them.
Nikki Saxby is absolutely right.
